Refugee centres and reception centres
The Dutch government has asked all safety regions to prepare 1,000 places for refugees. Ultimately, this number will increase to 2,000 places. Preference is given to safe, temporary reception centres, such as holiday parks and empty apartment complexes. The council is currently examining all the options in Breda. The council is looking for locations that could host refugees temporary.
Accommodation at De Koepel
De Koepel will become a temporary reception centre offering accommodation to Ukrainian refugees for a longer period of time. Preparations will be finalised this week (week 10) to ensure that the reception centres are ready for the first refugees. This is expected to be in the week of 14 March. Although we appreciate every bit of help that is given or offered, we must ask you not to bring any goods to this location.
De Koepel was selected for this purpose, because:
- it is quickly available and habitable
- it provides the required facilities, such as showers and toilets
- it can host up to 370 refugees
- help and guidance can be provided here
Regional centre for emergency shelter for new refugees in Utrecht
Refugees from Ukraine who have just arrived in the Netherlands and have been unable to arrange their own accommodation, can go to an emergency shelter in Utrecht. A crisis emergency shelter, equipped with 450 beds, is available in a hall at the Jaarbeurs exhibition and convention centre in Utrecht. A list is held here of all accommodation available to Ukrainian refugees in the Netherlands. This is a list of smaller reception centres located throughout the Netherlands where refugees can be accommodated.
In Utrecht, refugees are accommodated in the Jaarbeurs (Hall 5). More information is available at this website (Dutch) about these regional centres.
Consequences for Breda
In addition to the 370 places made available to refugees at De Koepel, we are looking at other locations which can provide shelter to refugees. We are doing this in close consultation with our regional councils. It is therefore still too early to say what this will mean for Breda.
