Driving licence

You need to apply for a driving licence at the municipality. For this, you need to make an appointment. You pay when submitting your application. The driving licence will be ready for you after 5 working days.

You will need the following

  • Valid proof of ID
  • Driving licence issued previously, if applicable
  • A passport photo that meets the requirements
  • PIN card

Expedited application

If you submit an expedited application before 2pm, the driving licence will be ready from 9.30am the next working day.

Fees

A driving licence costs € 40.65.
In the event of an expedited application, you pay an additional € 34.10.

Medical examination and Certificate of Fitness

On www.cbr.nl (Dutch)you can read what situations require you to complete a Certificate of Fitness. For example if, due to a change in your health status, you are in doubt whether you are still able to drive safely or whether you need an adjustment in your car in order to do so.

Renewing a Dutch driving licence when you live abroad

If you live abroad and have a driving licence that was obtained in the Netherlands, you cannot renew this licence with the municipality. The website of the Department of Road Transport (RDW) explains how to renew your driving licence.

Exchanging a foreign driving licence if you live in the Netherlands

If you live in the Netherlands, you can exchange a foreign driving licence for a Dutch driving licence.
