Education for children and young people from Ukraine

All children have a right to good education. That also applies to children from Ukraine living temporarily with their parents as refugees in Breda.

Once they have been registered as residents of Breda, they must go to school and they have a right to education.  Young people aged 5 - 18 years and their parents can go to school and will receive primary or secondary education in the Dutch language. Breda does not have a school which offers a complete Ukrainian education programme. Supplemental education is offered in the Ukrainian language and culture at the 'Prosvita Weekend School' which is held at Michaelkerk (St. Michael Church).

Children aged 2.5 to 4 years

To strengthen connections with primary schools, Breda supports the provision of pre-school education to Ukrainian infants aged 2.5 to 4 years. Infants will then learn Dutch and develop social-emotional skills whilst playing. Entry into pre-school education is through the child health clinic.

Children aged 4 to 6 years

Parents can enrol their young children at a primary school close to where they are living (temporarily).

Children aged 6 to 12 years

Parents of children aged up to 12 years can enrol their child at the Fontein primary school, Eerste Opvang Anderstaligen class ("First admission of foreign-language speakers) in Breda: De Opvang - De Fontein.
This school provides education regionally and specialises in education for children who do not speak Dutch.

Young people aged 12 to 18 years

Parents of young people from 12 to 18 years can contact the Internationale Schakelklas (ISK - International Transition Class) at the Curio school in Breda. This organisation provides education to students who don't yet speak Dutch. Call (088) 209 7060 or send an email to: isk@curio.nl (link sends an email).
