Breda for Ukraine
Historically, Breda is twinned with the Polish city of Wroclaw. The first initiative of Breda Maakt Mij Blij (Breda Makes Me Happy) and Breda Council to collect goods was successful. Wroclaw is now hosting more than 100,000 refugees. This means that there continues to be a need for many goods, such as non-perishable food, medicines and care products. Under the name ‘Breda for Ukraine’, over the next few months De Koepel BV and Breda Council will be organising collections of relief supplies and the transport of these goods to Wroclaw. The hope is to ensure a continuous flow of goods into Wroclaw. And this can be achieved thanks to a number of Breda-based sponsors.
Take action together (private persons)
Everyone can help by collecting goods. The collection point is De Koepel, Nassausingel 26 (report to reception). For more information and to see which products or goods are needed, visit: bredavooroekraine.nl (Dutch) contribution by private person.
Take action together (businesses)
Breda council is also asking businesses to collect relief supplies to ensure a continuous flow of goods into Wroclaw. For more information visit: bredavooroekraine.nl (Dutch) contribution by businesses.
MOOIWERK Breda (an organisation that assists individuals in finding volunteer work)
The images of the war in Ukraine are heart-breaking and all the help being offered and provided is heart-warming. Many inhabitants of Breda want to help and offer assistance.
Would you like to work as a volunteer? Or are you a voluntary organisation or sports club with something to offer? Please contact MOOIWERK Breda. Call (076) 523 35 60 or email vrijwilligerswerk@mooiwerkbreda.nl (link sends an email).
Refugeehelp.nl
Refugeehelp.nl is a good starting point for refugees from Ukraine and other people wishing to help them. Refugees can visit this website to find up-to-date information, in their own language about, for example, accommodation, public transport, education, work, medical care, care for pets or legal aid. This website also points refugees to organisations and initiatives that are important to them. This will help Ukrainians to understand how things work and how to find what they need in the Netherlands.
Refugeehelp.nl is aimed specifically at refugees from Ukraine because their situation differs significantly from that of other refugees. A Dutch language version of this website is also available to enable, for example, private individuals who host refugees to help them.
Lend a hand at De Koepel
The ‘Handjes in de Koepel’ initiative brought together 2,300 volunteers who, as a team, prepared De Koepel for the arrival of refugees.
The Red Cross
The Red Cross (Dutch) is fundraising to provide direct assistance to people in the Ukraine. You can donate money to Giro 5125, or through the national day of action to Giro 555.
The Red Cross has opened national helplines for refugees from Ukraine. By calling 06 48 15 80 53 on WhatsApp, refugees will be given help in English or Ukrainian. There is also a telephone helpline for questions about, for example, hosting refugees in private homes (this is a Dutch-language helpline). People asking for or offering help can use this helpline from 09:00 to 21.00 hours - 070 44 55 888.
Donating items
You can find up-to-date information about donating items at www.opvangindekoepel.nl. Specific items will be needed at certain times - here you can find a list of what items you can and cannot donate at the present time.
Breda Maakt mij blij is also organising collections of items for Ukraine.
You can also contact VluchtelingenWerk Nederland. They can decide what is needed and where, ensuring that supplies reach a useful destination.
Donate money
Donations of money are always welcome: Rode Kruis Nederland: Red Cross Netherlands, Giro555 (Dutch).
Open Embassy
Open Embassy is looking for people who have a good command of English, who are good at gathering information and/or speak the Ukrainian language. The network will be used to help Ukrainian refugees find housing, help them to find mental health support and with practical and legal matters.
Help for animals from Ukraine
You can help animals from Ukraine (Dutch). For example, by providing animal or pet food, animal beds, vaccinations, or by hosting refugees with their pets.
UNHCR
The international organisation for refugees UNHCR is providing help in Ukraine and neighbouring countries by offering emergency assistance 'on the ground'. You can donate money.
