Getting married in Breda

You can get married or register a partnership practically anywhere in Breda and on any day.

What you need to do

Preparation and notification

Would you like to marry or register your partnership at the city hall or municipal office? If so, you can immediately start the process of giving notice of your intended marriage or registered partnership.

If you wish to marry or register your partnership at another location, arrange the location first of all. Then you fill in the form (Dutch), in which you state at which location the ceremony will take place.

You can then start the process of giving notice of your intended marriage or registered partnership. Add the completed location form to the digital notification by uploading this.

 Notification using DigiD

This form is in Dutch. If you need assistance please call 14 076.

You do not need to live in Breda in order to get married there.
If neither you nor your partner live in the Netherlands and if at least one of you has Dutch nationality, you would give notice of your marriage to the municipality of The Hague (Dutch).

Selecting witnesses

When registering the marriage or partnership you need at least 2, but no more than 4, witnesses. Anyone aged 18 years and above can act as a witness.

Official registration

How do you officially register your relationship? By means of a marriage or registered partnership? Legally, a marriage and a partnership are practically identical. More information can be obtained from the Central Government about getting married and registered partnership. If you wish to marry or enter into a partnership under a limited community of property regime you do not have to do anything. If your marriage or registered partnership will be subject to a prenuptial agreement, you will need to make the necessary arrangements beforehand with a civil-law notary. Visit www.notaris.nl (Dutch) for further information.

Registrar

If you would like the registrar to give a speech during your ceremony, you should discuss this with the registrar. You may select your preferred registrar. When assigning a registrar to you, we will do our very best to accommodate your preference. Approximately 4 weeks before the date of your marriage or registered partnership, the municipality will inform you who has been assigned as your registrar. If you do not wish the registrar to give a speech during your ceremony, there will be no prior consultation.

It is also possible for your own registrar to perform your marriage or registered partnership ceremony. Your own registrar will then be sworn in or appointed as an unpaid special registrar of births, deaths, marriages and registered partnerships for your marriage or registered partnership. In the digital notification, indicate your choice and you will subsequently receive a form by email. Should you wish to use your own registrar, an additional charge will be made.

Costs

If you marry at a location other than the city hall or municipal office, you would pay the proprietor for the use of the location. These costs would be in addition to the charges shown on this page.
